Suminagashi Notebooks

Practical Paper Marbling

I wanted to put my new knowledge of Japanese paper marbling (aka Suminagashi) to practical use, so I developed a series of sketchbooks with marbled covers. An elastic string binds the book and a simple yellow band wraps it, stating my mantra: Do good, be rad.

An ancient form of printmaking, Suminagashi—or "ink floating"—originated in Japan during the 12th century and is now often used in book binding. To watch a video of basic Suminagashi techniques, click here. To learn more about Suminagashi, this write-up by the Met is a good place to start.
